There are various ways to send a message, with or without attached files, in a secure manner. If you fear that your messages can be read by someone who shouldn't, then you should encrypt them. DoCrypt provides you with everything you need to protect the messages and files you send to other people. Rather than storing your message in an encrypted file, you can encrypt the text itself, using various methods. This gives you the possibility of sending your messages and files through any service or application. Even if someone intercepts your message, they won't be able to read it without your key.

DoCrypt is available in free and paid versions, which are similar, apart from a few limitations which you will encounter in the free one. It is written in Java, so it should go without saying that you need to have Java installed on your computer. The application itself doesn't need to be installed. All you have to do is download a single .jar file and run it.

The application provides a compact user interface, which displays a few options for accessing your personal, password-protected key store and various documentation materials. The key store is where you may create and save AES and DES encryption keys. All you have to do is type a key alias and choose an algorithm and the application will create the key for you. The available encryption tools can be accessed through a series of top menus. Once you select a tool, its options will be displayed on the same user interface.

When it comes to encrypting text, DoCrypt allows you to choose between pre-computer and post-computer methods. As the name implies, a pre-computer method is a system that was used before the computer was invented. For example, one of the methods, which you can also put into practice with a pen on a piece of paper, is the popular Caesar's cipher, also known as the shift cipher. It involves substituting each letter of the alphabet with the next one or with a letter that is located a certain number of positions away. You can put them into practice with a pen on a piece of paper if you want to. Alternatively, you can opt for a shuffled cipher, which replaces each letter with a random one.

The post-computer encryption methods can be used on text and on files. You can cipher a text message, through a DES or AES protocol, using a password or one of your keys from the key store. Encrypting files is a similar procedure, but instead of typing, you have to select a file from a local folder. The software can also encrypt multiple files, from a folder of your choice and compress them.

Pros

DoCrypt places several encryption methods at your disposal. You can cipher text messages, through shifting, shuffling or other techniques. The software comes with a rich help file and video tutorials.

Cons

The AES encryption protocol is not available in the free version. While using DoCrypt, you can make sure that no one will be able to read your messages or open your files, except for the receiver.
